There is much debate on the effectiveness of supplements for increasing milk production.  People have been using many of the supplements on this list since before modern medicine, and many people still swear by them today.  Unfortunately, natural medicines rarely get the attention they deserve from researchers, so there isn’t an abundance of scientific observation on their efficacy.  While your results will likely vary from others based on your chemistry, these are the most popular natural supplements used to increase lactation.

1. Fenugreek

Fenugreek is a Mediterranean herb that has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries.  It is usually the primary ingredient in lactation teas and it is what is most often recommended for improving milk production.  Fenugreek is also loaded with nutrients and is a strong antioxidant, which could help provide relief for a wide range of conditions.

2. Lecithin

Lecithin supplements are derived from soy, which have been shown to prevent coagulation in the milk ducts for some women.  This can potentially help breastfeeding moms avoid clogged ducts, which can diminish your milk production.  It can also help prevent mastitis from occurring. 

3. Fennel

Fennel is a common herb that has been used for both culinary and medicinal purposes for centuries.  It’s been used to treat a variety of ailments from gastrointestinal conditions to menstrual issues, but it is also believed to boost lactation for breastfeeding moms. 

4. Milk Thistle

Milk thistle has been used as a lactation supplement for hundreds of years.  It’s often an active ingredient in lactation teas.  While the medicinal use of milk thistle has been studied for the treatment of liver disease, high cholesterol, and insulin resistance, there has not been much scientific research done on its ability to improve milk supply in breastfeeding mothers.
