I was fortunate to be part of a group of CS Faculty and Instructors taking TO@UW during the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 in preparation for launching the online Personal Finance major. Therefore, when we had to switch to remote instruction in the Spring, I was able to take advantage of some of the knowledge I had just acquired.
Some of the things that I believe made my Spring 2020 course successful even during the particular circumstances were: the course existing weekly topic/module structure (which allowed me to keep a rhythm), synchronous group work (student appreciated being able to connect with the instructor and their classmates), class discussions graded with Canvas rubrics (with questions based on relevant news, podcasts, or similar prompts), and groups built and evaluated using CATME (I learned about this tool in last year's all school meeting).
While I won't be able to cover all of these, I wanted to share the course homepage which highlights announcements (tip: you pick a number of latest announcement to be shown at the top of the website), links to modules, syllabus, eBook, course map (which is similar to a weekly rhythm but extended for the the entire semester and mapped to the topics), and summary of activities.
I am also including the Website Overview video in the following page. This is a walkthrough of the course website to help the students become familiar and comfortable with the structure and resources. I regularly teach this course but this semester Dr. Jordan VanRijn will be teaching it so it was recorded by him.
