3D Printing DIY Project
Now that you have completed the 3D printing module you will be tasked with implementing what you have learned. The goal of this DIY project is to create something useful that demonstrates design considerations. You will print the parts using an Ultimaker.
Requirements
- Use no more than 125 g of filament
- Include small diameter holes
- Demonstrate thin walls
- Demonstrate unsupported overhangs
-
Demonstrate one at least two of the following:
- Split the design into multiple parts to eliminate the need for support
- Threads: use press-fit thread inserts and nuts to use machine screws in your design
- Hinge: Include 1 living hinge
- Attach some component using a press fit (it can be decorative)
Given the requirements, a complex enclosure might be a great design project if you are lost on where to begin.
For example, you could do:
- a 2 piece box where the lid screws on
- a 2 piece box where the lid press-fits (snaps) on
- a box with a hinge that press-fits closed
- a box with a decorative press fit (maybe in a different color)

Deliverables
- Upload the STL files of your design
- Print your design
- Upload a picture(s) before post-processing and assembly
- Upload a picture after post-processing and assembly
- Write a short summary (<500 words) explain what you designed and considerations you made. If you weren't successful the first time and had to iterate the design, comment about this process.
