Technology in this Course
<Below is a list of tools and brief descriptions commonly used in UW-Madison courses. Please remove/add any tools necessary for your course. Additional tools might include Adobe Creative Suite, R, SPSS, and textbook platforms, among others.>
Canvas
If you are reading this page, you are already on Canvas. Canvas is our campus learning management system (LMS), which is an interactive course website. It is the place to submit assignments, participate in online discussions, complete quizzes, view your grades, and view a calendar with due dates.
Use the Canvas Student Guide

Web Browser
Chrome is the recommended web browser for Canvas, and it is best to always have the latest version installed for security reasons and to experience full functionality of the course. Visit the Canvas Community to learn more about which browsers Canvas supports.
Zoom
Zoom is a web conferencing tool that we will use to meet synchronously (live), for lectures and smaller discussions in breakout rooms. We will be able to share documents, create polls and surveys, and use whiteboard technology to collaborate with one another. You can access UW-Madison Zoom here.
Google Docs
In this course we will also be using UW-Madison's license for Google Apps (also referred to as a UW-Madison G Suite Account). This includes a collection of cloud-based productivity and collaborative tools including: Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets, among others. You can access UW-Madison's Google Docs here by logging in with your NetID And password.
Top Hat
Top Hat is the supported student response system at UW-Madison and is free to all students. We will use Top Hat in this course for knowledge checks and participation during in-person classes, and for some make-up work when students need to miss class. As a student, you can access Top Hat during class on a mobile device or computer, using a URL and Join Code provided to you during class. If you are unable to participate using technology during class, please notify your instructor so we can find another option.
Piazza
Piazza is a community discussion board for all students in this course. Students can pose questions about course topics, homework assignments, and exam review. You can collaboratively work on answers by adding, modifying, or deleting content. Instructors can view students' questions and answers, post their own comments, and endorse students' responses. As a student you can be anonymous to other students, but instructors will know students' identities. More information on Piazza can be found here as well as their accessibility features here.
Honorlock
Honorlock is an online exam proctoring service. It will be used this semester in this course to proctor quizzes and exams remotely. You will not need to create an account or schedule an appointment in advance. When taking an exam, you need a computer, a working webcam and microphone, your student ID, and a stable internet connection.
To get started, you will need to open the browser Google Chrome. Download the "Honorlock Chrome Extension Links to an external site.". When you are ready to complete your assessment, go to your Canvas course webpage, and click on your assessment. Click on "Launch Proctoring" to begin the Honorlock authentication process. You will take a picture of yourself, show your student ID, and complete a scan of your room. Honorlock will be recording your exam session through your webcam, microphone, and record your computer screen. Honorlock also has an automatic proctoring service for computer searches, smartphone searches, or communicating with other students. Please take note of the dates and times of all quizzes and exams to make sure you can access a quiet room with a computer that meets the requirements.
Honorlock support is available any time. If you encounter any issues, contact them through their live chat on the support page or within the exam. Please review some guides in regards to this proctoring service.
Technology Privacy & Security
<Please edit this as necessary regarding the tools used in your course.>
The privacy and security of faculty, staff and students’ personal information is a top priority for the university. The university carefully reviews and vets all campus-supported teaching and learning tools, including proctoring tools, and it takes necessary steps to ensure that tool providers prioritize proper handling of sensitive data in alignment with FERPA, industry standards, and best practices.
Visit the Office of the Registrar's FERPA overview for more information on student privacy and educational records.
