Week 10: Preparing for Final Projects

  1. Ice breaker
    1. Discuss with person not from your club: What are you struggling with most at your club -- with your students, with your team, or with your own mindset or situation?   What suggestions does the other person have for addressing these challenges?
    2. Repeat with someone else
  2. Final Project Guidelines for Students: 2 or 3 weeks of work time; Last day: Show-Off/Celebration Day?  Discuss with site coordinator!
    1. Guide them through brainstorming about projects; encourage them to make a decision promptly so they actually have enough time to implement it; help them choose a project they can realistically complete in 2 weeks using what they've learned so far
    2. Options
      1. Do you want to show them some possible options?
      2. Could do brainstorming  in smaller groups
      3. Could work with a partner
    3. Leading  questions that might help them with project ideas
      1. What projects did they like most in the past?
      2. Are there Scratch features they would like to learn more about? (music, sensing, video, clones?)
      3. Are there certain characters they would like to include in a story or game?
      4. What would they be proud to show their parents, teachers, or classmates?
    4. After they have an idea, how are they going to implement it?
      1. What will happen in their project (e.g., how does it respond to different key/mouse activities?)
      2. Can they break down their project into steps?
      3. What Sprites will they need?
    5. Resources
      1. Slides and Handout: Basics Links to an external site.
      2. http://scratched.gse.harvard.edu/guide/curriculum.html - Unit 6 Hackathon Links to an external site.
  3. Discuss:
    1. What are the characteristics of 1) an okay, 2) a good, and 3) a great final project for the kids at your club?  What will each of these types of final projects look like?  What range of blocks or concepts do you think each type will use?  How complex do you think each type of project will be (e.g, how many sprites, costumes, scripts)?
    2. Write down thoughts
  4. Work Time
    1. Create a new Scratch project that you could use to motivate the final project for your kids in your club

Do not remix any existing projects!

      Submit (before class next week):

    2. Finish up your mid-semester portfolio with your team (due tonight)
    3. Meet with your team to prepare for your next club...
