Welcome to Infectious Diseases!

We are so happy that you are choosing to learn more about the Pediatric Infectious Disease elective!

During your time with us, you should learn to:

Objectives:

Perform a comprehensive Infectious Disease History considering exposure and epidemiologic factors contributing to potential infections.
Recognize common patterns of infectious illnesses and generated appropriate differential diagnoses for patients with suspected infections,
Gain an understanding of the principles of antimicrobial stewardship to include appropriate selection, dosing and duration of empiric and targeted antimicrobial agents.
Identify the appropriate laboratory modalities used to identify pathogen under specific circumstances (e.g., microbiology, serology, molecular diagnostics)

Expectations:

Assume shared responsibilities of selected inpatients. Students should expect to preround on patients and attend daily rounds with the consultation team.
Attend outpatient infectious disease clinics. This includes consultations, hospital and outpatient follow up care and management of HIV patients.
Attend weekly case conferences, microbiology rounds and didactic educational session.
Students should be prepared to present patients they are following on daily rounds as well as during clinical case conferences.
Identify a clinical question, research the topic and give a brief (~10 minute) presentation to the ID team once during the rotation.
Students should check with the course director regarding learning activities for any unscheduled time that may correspond to the student’s interests.

Educational Opportunities:

The student will receive a weekly email providing the schedule for the following week, locations and/or virtual meeting addresses. In addition to the weekly activities listed in the table, students will have the opportunity to attend the following meetings:

Inpatient Consults

Please contact the fellow/resident or attending on call prior to rounding each day.
The inpatient team primarily sees patients at AFCH. There are occasional consults at St. Mary’s and at Meriter.
You will be added to the Peds ID Consult shared list just prior to the rotation.
You should receive a weekly patient sign out and schedule for the weeks you are on rotation.

Clinics are located in the B6/2 module. Check with the attending/fellow on service if there is time to attend the clinics.

Evaluation and Feedback:

The evaluation will be a composite of Pediatric Infectious Disease faculty feedback. The student will receive summative evaluation mid- to end of rotation by one of the facult members on rotation.
Students will receive face to face feedback from faculty regarding their clinical skills, presentation skills, medical decision making and/or interpersonal communication at least once. More immediate feedback will be provided by faculty and fellows throughout the course of the rotation.
