  2. Recognize common presenting signs and symptoms of joint pain in children and be able to distinguish inflammatory (arthritis) pain from non-inflammatory (musculoskeletal) pain.
  3. Recognize common presenting signs and symptoms of systemic autoimmune diseases (SLE, dermatomyositis, vasculitis).
  4. Identify common laboratory studies used in rheumatology and be able to understand their appropriate use.

Meet-up instructions

On your first day, go to AFCH 2155A in time for the first clinic slot shown in Epic, even if that clinic slot is empty. If there is no clinic scheduled for when you start the rotation, please page the attending on call to see if there are inpatient consults to see or for further instruction.

Expectations

  1. Attend all outpatient pediatric rheumatology clinics at AFCH. Students should read up on patients prior to seeing them in clinic. Students should try to see as many patients as possible and are expected to write at least one note per half day clinic, preferably on new patients.
  2. Perform inpatient consults and follow up on inpatients. Students should page the rheumatologist on call after clinic to see if there are any inpatient consults to see. Students should carry their pagers at all times so they can be contacted when there is a consult to see.
  3. See patients undergoing joint injections and receiving infusions in day treatment clinic.
  4. Read "The Resident's Guide to Pediatric Rheumatology"
  5. Give a 15 minute presentation on a topic of their choice in the final week of the elective.
  6. Please try to schedule appointments, meetings, etc. to avoid conflicts with the clinic schedule. There are ample spaces in the clinic schedule for this. (Please consult Healthlink for most up to date clinic schedule. Clinic= "AFCH Rheum")
