Welcome to Pediatric Care: Sports Medicine!

We are so happy that you are choosing to learn more about the Pediatric Care: Sports Medicine elective!

During your time with us, you should learn to:

  1. Perform a hypothesis driven history and complete a focused exam.
  2. Develop and present a weighted differential diagnosis.
  3. Using clinical evidence, adapt and justify the working diagnosis.
  4. Present a diagnostic plan including laboratory and imaging modalities.
  5. Correctly interpret imaging and laboratory findings and communicate results to patients and team members.
  6. Complete written documentation in a comprehensive, concise, accurate and timely manner.
  7. Review, interpret and present current literature to support patient care.
  8. Develop clinically relevant questions to advance learning.
  9. Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians and non-physician team members.
  10. Communicate and collaborate with consultants and/or primary team and other providers to coordinate care. 
  11. Engage patients in shared decision making regarding tests, orders and procedures.
  12. Avoid medical jargon when communicating with patients and families.
  13. Recognize limitations and seek assistance as appropriate.

Expectations

  1. Attend and participate in scheduled outpatient sports medicine clinics during the day interacting with patients, Licensed Athletic Trainers, Residents, Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellow and Physicians. Students should read up on patients prior to seeing them in clinic. Students should try to see as many patients as possible to maximize learning opportunities and are expected to write notes on the patients they see in clinic.
  2. Participate in division related conferences and consultations when appropriate.
  3. Students should check with the course director regarding learning activities for any unscheduled time.

    • The Research Park (RP) Sports Medicine Clinic is located at 621 Science Drive on the 2nd floor. 
    • The American Center (TAC) Sports Clinic is located at 4602 Eastpark Blvd on the 2nd floor in Clinics J & K.
