Welcome to Pediatric Endocrinology!

We are so happy that you are choosing to learn more about the Pediatric Endocrinology elective!

During your time with us, you should learn to:

  1. Competency for level of training in regarding growth, puberty, thyroid, diabetes.
  2. Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team with nurses, nutritionists, and other specialists.
  3. Competency in use of growth charts, thyroid exam, pubertal exam.
  4. Understanding of what technology can and cannot do in diabetes care.
  5. Exposure to daily work environment/experiences of the pediatric endocrinology team.
  6. Experience in the role of a consultant to the wards and ICUs.
  7. Experience using templates to document outpatients visits and inpatient consults.

Expectations

  1. Attend orientation with Dr. Ellen Connor usually on first day of rotation to go over division’s expectations
  2. Attend all assigned outpatient and virtual clinics at AFCH. Clinics include diabetes, endocrine, PCOS, Fitness and possibly PATH. Students should read about patients prior to seeing them in clinic.
  3. Perform inpatient consults and follow up on inpatients when assigned to consults. Students should page the fellow/faculty on call to see if there are any inpatient consults to see. Students should carry their pagers at all times so they can be contacted when there is a consult to see.
  4. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team with nurses, nutritionists, and other specialists
  5. Participate in chart review that will be organized by on call faculty and fellow
  6. Participate in standardized cases that will be scheduled by fellow and/or faculty
  7. Be expected to attend Tuesday 11:30 Division Meetings
  8. Be invited to attend the other endocrine conferences (research/CLS)
  9. Give a 10 minute presentation on a topic of their choice in the final week of the elective
  10. Be expected to check with the course director regarding learning activities for any unscheduled time

  1. Clinics
    • Endo clinics (including PCOS) occur at AFCH; Team Room is in the Cat Hallway 2624.
      In person diabetes clinics occur at 2275 Deming Way- Team room is 2137.
    • Kitchen/Break Room (sink, microwaves, refrigerators): Door Code 1752*
    • Schedule – Weekly schedules will be sent out on Wednesday prior to the next week –any questions contact Mckenzy Suhr at msuhr@pediatrics.wisc.edu.
  2. Inpatient Consults
    • When not in clinic, contact Peds on-call Fellow or Attending On Call via web paging.
    • Consults are often (but not always) viewable on HealthLink “PedsEndoSignout” shared patient list. Ask one of the attendings for access.
  3. Chart review and Cases will be scheduled by Fellow/Attending and may be virtual or in person.
  4. Resident Education Sessions – see schedule in MedHub (Instructions for accessing MedHub in “Educational Resources” section below.)
