Welcome to Pediatric Adolescent Medicine!

We are so happy that you are choosing to learn more about the Pediatric Adolescent Medicine elective!

During your time with us, you should learn to:

  1. Perform a hypothesis driven history and complete a targeted exam.
  2. Develop and present a weighted differential diagnosis.
  3. Using clinical evidence, adapt and justify the working diagnosis.
  4. Present a diagnostic plan including laboratory and imaging modalities.
  5. Correctly interpret imaging and laboratory findings and communicate results to patients and team members.
  6. Complete written documentation in a comprehensive, concise, accurate and timely manner.
  7. Review, interpret and present current literature to support patient care.
  8. Develop clinically relevant questions to advance learning.
  9. Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians and non-physician team members.
  10. Communicate and collaborate with consultants and/or primary team and other providers to coordinate care.
  11. Engage patients in shared decision-making regarding tests, orders and procedures.
  12. Avoid medical jargon when communicating with patients and families.
  13. Recognize limitations and seek assistance as appropriate.

Expectations:

The Adolescent Medicine elective is self-directed. Students tailor their rotation to suit their interests. Students will receive an e-mail prior to the start of the rotation with specifics regarding the rotation, including where and when to show up on the first day of rotation.

  • Pediatric and Adolescent Transgender Health (PATH) clinic: Drs. Britt Allen and Dr. Jen Rehm. PATH clinic is most often primarily adolescent patients and occurs once every 2 weeks (Tuesday morning once monthly and Wednesday morning once monthly). If you are interested in being a part of PATH clinic, you should contact Theresa Duhr at tmduhr@pediatrics.wisc.edu as she coordinates our learner scheduling.

**If there are other areas within Adolescent Medicine of interest, please let me know and we can try to arrange an experience.

Students should read up on patients prior to seeing them in clinic. Students should try to see as many patients as possible and are expected to write at least one note per half day clinic, preferably on new patients.

Students are required to give a 15 minute presentation on a topic of their choice in the final week of the elective. Paula Cody will help to arrange.

Sometimes you cannot fill every half day session - those times, you can work on your presentation or the readings.
