BRAIN ON A STICK - PHD COMICS.gif

In this first assignment, you will introduce yourself to your TA and your classmates through our online text discussion board here in Canvas.  (This will also be your introduction to our threaded discussion tool.)

Complete these steps

1.  Find the Canvas text discussion board for your section.   All of our Canvas text discussions are visible on this Canvas page: Discussions  (You might want to open that link in a separate window so you can see these instructions at the same time.)

Notice that the Canvas Discussions page has three sections:

  • Pinned Discussions are always available -- here is where you will find your section's discussion board.
  • Discussions are other text discussion boards that might be more temporary.
  • Closed for Comments boards are older discussions which are no longer active.

Find your TA's discussion board for your section -- it should be labeled with the section number, the day/time of the week your section meets, and your TA's name.  Click into the discussion board and read the instructions.

2. Find the message prompt from your TA for this assignment.  The discussion boards are "threaded" which means that your postings get automatically stored under the comment that you are responding to.  You want to respond by first opening up the existing post from your TA, something like "Post your introduction here".

3. Post a message.  Once you are in the discussion board, viewing the correct comment from your TA, you can use the "Reply" button at the bottom to add a comment of your own to the discussion -- it looks like this: REPLY.png.  Do this and introduce yourself in a paragraph or two.  You should mention your name, whether you have a preferred nickname or preferred pronouns, your hometown and/or home country, and what you're majoring in (or what you're considering if  you haven't chosen a major yet).  Your TA  may also ask you something goofy to help break the ice!

4. Try to upload a picture. There's a little tool to "Embed Image" in the toolbar that you see when you're composing a reply -- it looks like this: EMBED IMAGE.png.  See if you can use this to upload an image of yourself -- that will be especially helpful for fellow students to remember your name and place it with your online postings.

5. Finally, click "Post Reply" to add your post to the discussion board.  (It looks like this: POST REPLY.png )  You might want to check in later to read the introductions of your classmates too.  It is a good practice to visit the discussion board at least once a day.

That's it -- once you've contributed your self-introduction to the discussion board, nothing more needs to be uploaded to Canvas for this assignment.
