Before your first club meeting, you must visit your club site.
You will receive an email introducing your club leaders to your "site coordinator" (this will be a teacher or a parent who is associated with the school and enrolls the kids in your club).
This introductory email will suggest that you perform a site visit exactly 1 week before your club begins (i.e., the same day and time). If this time does not work for you or your site coordinator, choose a different time that works for everyone.
Be sure to confirm your site visit before you actually visit! If you don't get an email response in a couple of days, you probably want to re-send your request. Please cc' the instructor in your initial communication with the site coordinator and any times you have problems.
o How many students are expected to attend the club each week?
o Do the students choose to attend or not?
o Can you get a list of student names before the club begins?
o How many of the kids will have used Scratch before?
o Do they have recommendations for getting kids to pay attention? (Is there a special phrase that is used at this site?)
o If there is a problem during the club, who should you contact/see?
o When is the room available before the club begins so that you can get set up?
o If you meet the librarian or other teachers who use your room, be sure to introduce yourself and see if they have any special requirements.
o Do kids have permission to create their own Scratch account or should they use a UW account?
o Do they have pencils and paper for the kids to use?
o Erasable markers for you to use the whiteboard?
o Is there a place where you can leave nametags and papers?
When you visit, bring with you:
o Your laptop so you can test the projector and wireless
o Camera. This can help you remember the room; it is surprisingly difficult to remember the details of a room after you leave!
During your visit try out the computers and imagine how you will be leading a club here:
o What is the arrangement of computers in the room? Decide where the kids will be sitting when you are explaining things. Is there room for any activities away from a computer?
o Can just the monitors be turned off when the kids should be paying attention to an instructor? Can keyboards be put up if they can't resist typing?
o How do the kids login to the computers? Do you have the ability to login to their computers?
o How do you run a web browser?
o How will you get to Scratch?
o Do you have access to a wireless network if you want to use your laptop?
o Do you have access to a projector and screen to lead the class? (It is a good idea to actually try this out ahead of time, set up a screen, and see what the resolution looks like from different seats) CS 402 has one portable projector if you run into problems.
o Can you play sound on the computers? (do they have headsets?) Can you record audio? Take video from their computers? (Multimedia leads to much more interesting Scratch projects.)
