My Team’s TALK Assignment is due FRIDAY, ________________________________
The next 3 weeks we’ll have deadlines every Friday – KNOW YOUR TEAM!
1) Give PERSUASIVE TALKS (next 3 weeks, a different team)
2) Use a Visual Aid/PowerPoint Show, 4 min – WATCH the time!!
Theme: A serious talk – a call to action that’s important to you
AUDIENCE: UW–Madison students
What is important for our society to change at the local, state or national level?
- What evidence do you need to convince your audience?
- What do they need to understand to accept your point of view?
- What action can your audience take?
AVOID 3 THINGS:
1) Logical Fallacies pitfalls to avoid when appealing to your audience
- Consult “Logical Fallacies” handouts (Wk 8)
- Can you identify a logical fallacy from an opponent’s view?
- Can you refute fairly? (No ad hominems!)
2) Uptalk – read Smithsonian (January 2014) and study class video:
Uptalk and Public Speaking: Does Uptalk Make You Upchuck?
Links to an external site.
3) AVOID PLAGIARISM! Credit all sources and don’t cut & paste from a website
- Never use someone else’s PowerPoint slides – from the web or another class.
- When in doubt, cite the source – prove that you are conscientious!
STRUCTURE: “4 Cs of Storytelling” (Joe Lambert, Center for Digital Storytelling)
1) Make a CONNECTION with your audience. Surprise them! Share something they can identify with. Be interesting, dramatic, witty, philosophical …
2) Add CONTEXT so your audience understands your story - not too much; just enough context to deepen your connection. “This is an important issue because…” “Critics suggest ____, however…”
3) Focus on the CHANGE or CLIMAX - Did you solve the problem? Provide help with a thoughtful solution? It’s the secret revealed or the persuasive punch line.
4) CONCLUSION: Give us an insight or a lesson that we can relate to. Don’t just stop your talk - give some wisdom, wit, or genuine heart.
YOUR FINAL WORDS: “Thank you!”
