Tutorial - FDM Test Part
- Due No Due Date
- Points 10
- Submitting a text entry box or a file upload
One of the best ways to quickly see the impact of these design considerations is to print a test part that challenges the 3D printer with features that might not quite be possible. For example, large overhangs or small features. One such test part can be found on Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1363023 Links to an external site.
As you can see in the picture, this torture test will quickly show you if the FDM process can handle the various features incorporated into this small part.
For the assignment, download the part from Thingiverse and print it using PLA on one of the Ultimakers. Use the simple slicing parameters and only vary the layer height between 0.06 and 0.15 mm. Do not enable support, as you want to test overhangs.
Deliverables
- Upload the project file (.3mf) after slicing in Cura
- Upload a picture of the printed 3D test part
- Compare the design rules poster with the part you printed and comment on how your layer height selection would affect some of the features (<300 words).
