Formatting your dissertation

Here is a quick checklist at a glance that covers some of the most common errors, but remember, you are responsible for reading all formatting requirements.

  1. Follow the title page format exactly, paying attention to punctuation, wording, the way in which the committee members are listed and all details.  No Dr. prior to the committee members’ names. See the example title page on the Grad School website.
  2. No page number on title page (and no page number on copyright page, if you have one).
  3. Preliminary pages must begin with Roman numeral i lower case; use Roman numerals lower case for all preliminary pages, including Dedication, Acknowledgements, Table of Contents and Abstract.
  4. Put page numbers in the right-hand corner one inch from both top and side of the page. Page numbers half an inch from the top of the page are acceptable.
  5. Begin the main body of the dissertation with Arabic numeral 1.
  6. Landscaped page numbers must be in portrait position.  See more information on the Grad School website.
