Canvas: Assessing, grading, and monitoring student activity
Listed below are several mechanisms available within a Canvas course by which you can assess student knowledge and activity.
Assessments
These first three objects -- Assignments, Quizzes and Discussions-- are all potential assessment tools. They are not required to have a grade given. But, they are the only way you can give grades to a student. That is to say, these three objects are the only items that can be made to appear as a column in the Canvas gradebook.
Assignments
papers, projects, presentations, drafts, participation, attendance
Quizzes
pop-quizzes, online exams, surveys, mid-semester feedback
Discussions
current events, FAQs, group discussions

Grades
The Canvas gradebook provides you with space to record a student's achievement on an assessment (listed above). There are several viewing, and action options available within the gradebook.
