Canvas: Student View
What is it?
One of the best ways to ensure your course is configured and viewable by students in the way you intend is to view the course as a test student using Student View.
How do I do it?
Refer to this Canvas Guide to view your course as a test student.
Best Practices
- Complete quizzes as your test student to experience the quiz and feedback exactly as a real student would.
- If your modules index page includes prerequisites and requirements then navigate through those items in the same way a student would to ensure your settings are correct. Reset the test student if you need to test again.
- Be sure the leave Student View when you're ready to return to editing mode.
- Note: Canvas allows integration with several third-party products. Because of some of the technology behind the scenes, some artifacts from those third-party products may not render properly in Student View. For example, when embedded into a Canvas page, a Pressbook eText does not appear in Student View.
Example Use Case
- Multiple students contact you saying that one of the required pages for a module is unavailable for them to view. You log into Canvas, click on Student View and get the same result when trying to access the page. You leave Student View and examine the page in question, which reveals that you inadvertently checked the "Allow in Mastery Paths" checkbox at the bottom of the page. You uncheck the box and test again, with success.
